After 5 weeks of recording at Private Eat Studios, without a single day off, The Kindred created their latest full-length ‘Life In Lucidity’. The Ottawa metal band (formerly Today I Caught The Plague) incorporated grand piano, a choir, live trumpet, and even the 1st violinist of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra to create an album far greater than the sum of it’s parts. The sextet set out on a North American tour to support the record alongside Between The Buried and Me, Deafheaven, and Intronaut. Following up last fall’s ‘EOLIAN INSTATE’ EP, underground UK producer patten releases his debut full-length at his new home Warp Records. ‘ESTOILE NAIANT’ invites listeners into patten’s exquisitely atypical world that Dazed and Confused called “brain-meltingly good”. Preview his one-of-a-kind sound with the latest video for ‘Agen’ or the first track to drop ‘Drift’. Ahead of their fourth studio album, the follow up to 2012′s ‘Neck Of The Woods’, Silversun Pickups look back at the musical milestones of their journey so far with ‘The Singles Collection’. The limited edition box set features the California band’s biggest hits, from ‘Lazy Eye’ to the freshly released ‘Cannibal’ pressed on 7″ vinyl. The set also includes the vinyl-exclusive track ‘Devil’s Cup’, a previously-unreleased song from the ‘Swoon’ sessions. Enter Exclaim!’s contest to win a copy of the collection here.

THE KINDRED 2013 smaller

Ottawa, Ontario’s progressive rock sextet The Kindred (formerly known as Today I Caught the Plague) is no stranger to the road or studio, DIY-ing themselves through a successfully self-financed full-length in 2011, which cultivated tours with bands such as Protest the Hero, The Devin Townsend Project, Periphery, The Faceless, Jeff Loomis and Scale the Summit. After leaving a trail of buzz from two back-to-back tours across the US, it was only a matter of days before the band would catch the attention of labels and management.

Following his excellent 2012 EP ‘Parallel’ Canadian hip-hop front-runner Elaquent returns with ‘Green Apples and Oranges’ from Urbnet. The Guelph, Ontario-based artist’s new EP is another vibrant exhibition of ahead-of-the-curve production and musicianship the producer has to offer. Hear the perhaps locally named ‘Aurora’ on Elaquent’s Soundcloud. Issues‘ self-titled debut LP 100% delivers on the promises shown through their Black Diamonds EP. The band teamed with producer Kris Crummet to create more genre bending tracks. Catch them currently on tour with Of Mice & Men and Bring Me The Horizon, they pass through Toronto Feb 22 at the Sound Academy. ‘Rattlesnake Cage’ finally gives fans the opportunity to hear Steve Dawson interact with his guitar in a way that has never been captured on record before. The prolific Vancouver blues musician will bring the record on a cross-Canada tour through the spring. Released via Black Hen Music also on 180 gram vinyl LP.

daniel lanois papineau

Legendary singer/songwriter and producer Daniel Lanois returns with a new single, ‘Papineau,’ a duet with Laura Cole, available Feb. 14 via iTunes and Lanois’ own Red Floor Records.

Lanois says of track, “‘Papineau’ is a song I’ve had in my head for 15 years, a song designed to be sung as a duet….a Father/Daughter conversation.

“I invited Laura Cole to sing the role of the daughter. Laura helped me with a few lyric lines and we recorded the song in three hours. Alex Krispin turned on the camera and captured the studio vocal performance and that’s it, a nice spontaneous afternoon and voila! we have ‘Papineau.’

patten 2

The video for “Agen,” taken from upcoming record ESTOILE NAIANT, is an elegant exercise in typology, directed by regular collaborator Jane Eastlight. Trawling hundreds of image search terms to create a unique vision of a fever-dreaming stream of consciousness, Eastlight’s ultra-modern psychedelia perfectly mirrors patten‘s entrancing and opulent sound.

ESTOILE NAIANT, patten‘s debut album on Warp/Fontana North, is released on February 25. The full-length sees him step out of the shadows and into full focus as a producer of impending resonance. patten has already performed in front of thousands at the Tate in London, and played in the US for the first time in early January in NYC with shows at Joe’s Pub as part of an APAP showcase, Output and participated in the first 285 Kent farewell show along with Laurel Halo and Autre Ne Veut.
