June 30th, 2014

Within less than two months Brian Eno and Karl Hyde have released two spectacular albums, the second of which – ‘High Life’ – is out today. Having completed ‘Someday World’ the duo rushed back into the studio to continue working on ideas they hadn’t been able to fully flesh out the first time around. Listen to the first sample dropped from the LP ‘DBF’ or the short making-of video recorded during the sessions. Toronto’s very own fuzzed-out indie rock band Rival Boys have released their full-length debut ‘Animal Instincts’. The trio recorded the album at Revolution Recording Studios with Joe Dunphy who also recorded their ‘Ice Storm’ EP live off the floor earlier this year. Watch them shred ‘Fortune’ in an abandoned house in the video for the newest album single here. Exclaim! also had them perform the raucous number ‘Sober & Single’ live at The Piston in Toronto for their Exclaim! TV series, watch it here. Sean Watkins of Nickel Creek fame is releasing his first solo album for Roaring Girl Records titled ‘All I Do Is Lie’. Watch Sean talk about and perform ‘Since The Day That I Was Born’ live for Guild Guitars here.

Dave Bidini Debuts New Song ‘Ford More Years’ Written Entirely in Rob Ford’s Own Words

June 10th, 2014

 bidini-ford

Watch Dave Bidini’s National Post Sessions performance of ‘Ford More Years’ HERE

“It’s no secret that Bidini has lived a life of adventure, and his third solo release showcases how his well of inspiration may never run dry.” – Joshua Kloke, Exclaim!

“Bidini isn’t happy with what’s happened to his country, and he’s not afraid to name names either. As opposed to Neil Young’s Living With War, there are lots of breaks from the bolder words, and plenty of inventive, fun music as well.  Of the three Bidiniband albums, this feels most like a [Rheostatics] set.” – Bob Mersereau, CBC

Fans who were able to attend the recent launch of Bidiniband‘s third album, The Motherland, at Toronto’s Dakota Tavern were given an extra treat: the first public airing of a new song composed using Toronto mayor Rob Ford’s own words. ‘Ford More Years’ is a brilliant satirical pastiche of Ford’s now well-known comments over the past year defending himself over his reckless behaviour.

It’s a shame that the song wasn’t able to be included on The Motherland because it would have provided a natural coda to the album’s overarching theme of how much Canada’s image has been manipulated over the past decade through the actions of those in power.

Sumo Cyco Release Debut LP ‘Lost In Cyco City’ June 10

June 5th, 2014

 Sumo Cyco - Preess Photo

“Long before the first guitar riff, front woman Sever’s honey dripping sex appeal pulls you in. Sumo Cyco’s infectious rage rock lit up the Bovine Sex Club as Sever channeled every fiber of early Gwen Stefani with her mind bending vocals making every number a theatrical narration.” - John Perfetto, www.tmakworld.com

Sumo Cyco is a four-piece female fronted hard rock band from Toronto. Their sound blends heavy metal guitars with in your face blast beats, dance hall rhythms, all topped off with molten lava female vocals. The band’s full-length debut album ‘Lost in Cyco City’ is produced by Matt Drake (Dodger, illScarlett).

Some may be surprised to learn that front woman Sever is the alter ego of Skye Sweetnam, the former teen-pop sensation, who signed to Capitol Records and EMI (Sony/ATV) Publishing at the age of fourteen. Skye performed in over 25 countries and opened up for Britney Spears for 50 dates on the Onyx Hotel Tour, all before her 17th birthday.

Stream ‘Lost in Cyco City’ here and pre-order the album on iTunes here.
