The fourth Suicide Silence full-length album ‘You Can’t Stop Me’ is equal parts mournful tribute and a statement of renewed purpose. The album got its title from a collection of lyrics left behind by late vocalist Mitch Lucker. Watch the video for the title track of what the band calls their most impassioned, most committed, and most important release thus far. Catch them on the Rockstar Mayhem Fest tour which stops in Toronto July 25th! The Los Angeles metal outfit Volumes have released their decibel shattering, mind-numbing sophomore album ‘No Sleep’. The 5-piece blend their eclectic tastes to create a bond between genres that are worlds apart and resulted in progressive, aggressive, straight to the point metal. Watch the lyric video for album opener ‘The Mixture’. Catch Volumes live at every Warped Tour date this Summer! I, Omega make their full-length debut today with ‘Transients’. The prog-metal quintet have pushed themselves as far as technically possible musically: shredding guitars over upbeat drums and beefy basslines with catchy choruses that range from angelic to devilish. Alejandra Ribera’s ‘I Want’ Wins 2014 SOCAN Songwriting Prize

July 8th, 2014

alejandra ribera la-boca-coverfinal
Second consecutive win for a Pheromone Recordings artist!

SOCAN, the Society of Composers, Authors and Music Publishers of Canada, today announced that Alejandra Ribera’s ‘I Want’ is the English language winner of the 2014 SOCAN Songwriting Prize. ‘I Want’ comes from La boca, Alejandra’s wildly applauded debut recording for Pheromone, released in February 2014.

Toronto born, Montreal resident Alejandra had this to say: “‘I Want’ is a song about hope, joy and gratitude, and I feel all of those very deeply in receiving this honour from SOCAN. I was so happy just to be nominated and am indebted to those who celebrated my nomination and supported ‘I Want.’”

It’s an especially proud moment for Pheromone as this win makes it two years in a row for the label — the 2013 winner was Mo Kenney for her extraordinary song ‘Sucker,’ from her self titled debut recording.

Pheromone’s owner Kim Cooke offered, “I am so happy for and proud of Alejandra. She is a special artist and human being and La Boca is a fantastic recording that will resonate down the years. I would like to thank SOCAN for creating the Songwriting Prize and also CBC Radio 2 and Espace Music which embraced and promoted this recording, bringing it to attention of music lovers nationally. Now the big question:  can Pheromone three-peat in 2015?”

Sean Watkins’ ‘All I Do Is Lie’ Out Now! – Miranda Mulholland’s ‘Whipping Boy’ Debuts at #8 on Galaxie Folk-Roots Chart!

July 3rd, 2014

sean watkins miranda mulholland

Although it’s only a few months old, Roaring Girl Records, founded by Miranda Mulholland, already boasts two of the best roots music releases of the year so far: Miranda’s own solo debut, ‘Whipping Boy,’ and ‘All I Do Is Lie’ the latest solo effort by Sean Watkins, singer/guitarist of Grammy-winning modern bluegrass group Nickel Creek.

sean watkins aidil
“With his new song ‘Since the Day That I Was Born,‘ Watkins starts his album off with the youthful energy and adolescent charm that first endeared Nickel Creek to fans back in 1989 – when he was 12.”  - CMT EDGE

Sean Watkins’ 10 self-penned numbers on ‘All I Do Is Lie’ were recorded in pieces between June 2012 and July 2013 in Los Angeles, Encinitas, Davenport, IA, Ann Arbor, MI and in a few hotel rooms across the Midwest. Joining Sean on this effort are his sister Sara, Gillian Welch and Greg Leisz, among others.

On top of playing with Nickel Creek — on tour this summer in support of their latest album ‘A Dotted Line’ — Watkins has toured as a side man with Jackson Browne and Lyle Lovett, and appeared on records by Dolly Parton, Steve Martin & Edie Brickell, the Chieftains, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Hank Williams Jr., Dan Wilson and many others.

Miranda Mulholland whipping boy
“‘Whipping Boy’ confirms that the question will soon be who’s playing with Miranda Mulholland, not the other way around.” (8/10) – Exclaim!

Recorded in Los Angeles and Toronto with producer/multi-instrumentalist Sean Watkins (Nickel Creek), ‘Whipping Boy’ sees Miranda step beyond her more familiar roles as a key member of Great Lake Swimmers and Belle Starr.
Fresh, literate and dynamic, this uncompromisingly honest record features Miranda’s skilled singing and fiddle playing, Sean’s virtuosic guitar as well as cameos by Greg Leisz, Natalie Haas, Burke Carroll and the other members of Belle Starr, Kendel Carson and Stephanie Cadman.
