Joel Plaskett Announces The Release Of ‘Joel Plaskett & The Park Avenue Sobriety Test’

January 20th, 2015

 joel plaskett

The Park Avenue Sobriety Test :  Is it the name of a band?  A metaphor?  A Dartmouth rite of passage?  An acronym?  It’s a bit of all those, and a bit of a mystery too.  It’s also the name of Joel Plaskett’s new album, another brilliant collection of songs that features both the classic Plaskett sound and a story thread.

“The album is about a 39-year old wrestling with his place on earth and society, navigating it.  It sounds banal, and it kind of is, but it’s important to me.  And maybe if you’re at the same point in your life that I am, it will make sense. As you get more experiences as an adult, you start notching up the lost friends, and the missed opportunities, and the way things could or couldn’t have gone.  You can choose to crumble or retreat, temporarily or permanently.  Or you power through it and look for the joy. I think I try to strike the balance of the two perspectives here, I really can feel both of those at certain times, and even the same time.”

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis To Release ‘The Third’ March 31

January 12th, 2015

Kitty, Daisy & Lewis return with their new album ‘The Third‘  which will be released on March 31st 2015 via Fontana North and Kartel Music Group.

Described as “a gift to those of us who still believe in magic” (The Observer), they have used the three years since the release of their highly acclaimed ‘Smoking In Heaven‘ wisely, building a new 16 track analogue studio in a derelict Indian restaurant in Camden Town, resulting in an album and a sound all of their own making.  With new space and equipment, the band knew they could take their third album to another level.

An early fan, Mick Jones of The Clash, was keen to get involved as producer. He spent four months rehearsing in their home  and utilizing many forgotten recording techniques.  ”This magical, heart-warming record really does produce a feeling of wonder” says Jones.
“With Mick on board, it was the first time we have worked with a producer,” says Lewis, “Just having someone else in the room meant we could start bouncing ideas off other people and that was great.”  ”Our song writing has definitely changed over the three years,” adds sister Kitty, “Through life experience and expanding our musical influences, we have now incorporated more of our musical loves into our music.   ”And we had more gear to play with,” says Daisy, “16 tracks, rather than 8, gave us the chance to use different production techniques and expand on our ideas in the studio”. Ron Hawkins Releasing ‘Garden Songs’ February 3

January 12th, 2015

ron hawkins
Ten-track collection captured live off the floor at Toronto’s Revolution Recording

With a catalogue built upon razor-sharp lyricism, and unforgettable melodies, Ron Hawkins has long been revered as one of Canada’s greatest contemporary singer-songwriters.

His latest solo release, Garden Songs, out Feb.3 2015 on Pheromone Recordings, is partially the result of a self-imposed challenge to record and mix a full album of his more contemplative repertoire all in one hot week of activity.

Hawkins approached Pheromone’s Kim Cooke with the idea, and the wheels were quickly set in motion to lay down Garden Songs’ collection of ballads live off the floor at Toronto’s Revolution Recordings with producer/engineer Joe Dunphy.

Christina Martin To Release ‘It’ll Be Alright’ Feb. 24

January 12th, 2015

Fifth album by the Halifax-based singer/songwriter marks a major artistic breakthrough

“Martin mixes her intense and intimate character writing with her toughest and strongest music to date.  Always handy with pop melodies and arrangements, now she has more edge, and lots of blistering guitar moments to go with it.” – Bob Mersereau, CBC/Author of The Top 100 Canadian Albums

Experimentation is the lifeblood of any artist. But occasionally they experience moments when everything comes into focus, and suddenly they have opened a door to a limitless creative future.

Christina Martin has reached that point on her fifth album, ‘It’ll Be Alright,’ released Feb. 24 on her own Come Undone Records, in partnership with Fontana North. The 10-song collection finds the Halifax-based singer-songwriter attaining what her music has always suggested, a place where the ghosts of her musical heroes freely mingle with pop-rock’s modern architects.
